Fall Leave from the Gap
Hiking in dress shoes
Will and I found a cabin open for 3 nights we had talked about doing something. I have since I started teaching been very ready for a break every year about mid October and since our school does not have a fall break I made my own this year. Thurs. Night we headed off and got to spend the night with some good friends(the Odell's in Humbolt, TN). Friday morning we headed the rest of the way to Pigeon Forge, TN, via a stop in Nashville at the Cheesecake Factory. When we saw how expensive it was we split and lunch pizza and salad combo and a piece of cheesecake. We decided we would not frequent there very often and only on special occasions.
It took us a lot longer than we thought to get to Pigeon Forge, get our groceries, and get settled in the cabin. We watched a movie after dinner then headed to bed. Saturday morning, we decided we would go to a couple shops and a craft festival. The traffic to Gatlingburg was horendous so this ended up taking a lot longer than we thought. We got back to the cabin mid afternoon for lunch and then took Jasper out for a hike on the one of two trails they allow dogs. We did not get to the end of the trail because it was starting to turn dark. We played our free round of minigolf we had gotten the summer of 2007, acutally our niece who was 2-3 got a whole in 1 free game and gave it to us. That night we watch Fly Wheel.
Sunday we were gonna head up the mountain early and take an 8 mile hike but decided to go to a local church. This was one I had been to several years ago with some friends. It is a very intereting congregation. They have a little over 100 members but end up averaging over 500 people on a Sunday because of vacationers. They see this as a very unique mission opportunity and are in the process of getting a bigger building. Will grilled steak for lunch while I picked up two bags of black walnuts from the yard to bring home :).
We then headed back up the mountain to look at the leaved from Newfound Gap and hike the 8 mile hike. When we got to the top Will realized he still had his church shoes on. It had probably taken an hour to get there. So we started hiking. After an hour and a half we met a couple that said we would never make it the whole way and back of even to jump point(whatever that is and back). We had alreay figured this and had a time we would stop and turn around. We had a great time and are hoping to hike the whole trail next trip. We went back down the mountain and decided on Long John Silvers and marble slab ice cream. We got pumpkin and blac walnut and both were delicious. We then headed back to the cabin to get in the hottub which was really just warm and then played Silverton, the long version.
We had a very relaxing time and enjoyed the fall whether and the outdoors.
We had worn our fleece shirts from Canada all weekend since it was cool there and they were really a conversation piece. Lots of people were interested in if we were from Canada how the health care plans were there, if we spoke French, ect. Finally the last people that asked really were from Canada so I talked about some of the places there I had been and how beautiful they were.
